Beards are awesome! Throughout history beards have been symbols of status & prestige. They mark the transition of a boy becoming a man. A well-groomed beard can be stylish, sexy, and even appropriate for most business settings. An unkempt beard, on the other hand, can make you look sloppy, dirty, and lazy. Studies have shown that women are attracted to a well-groomed beard, but generally despise neckbeards and ungroomed facial hair. Sometime during the winter of 2019 I started noticing beard straightening combs popping up in my social media feeds. They ranged in price from $20 all the way to $60 or more. Being a barber, I thought they were quite the gimmick and were designed more to part men with their money than to actually help tame wild beards. I laughed at them and felt sorry for all the guys that were sure to get suckered into buying one.

Fast forward to early spring and a client of mine said he was going to buy one (He has one of those “damn son!” massive beards and was coming to me regularly to keep it under control. I would often have to use my hairdryer and a round brush to get that beast under control and everything flowing in the same direction.) I told him they were just a gimmick and that he’d be better served to save his money.

Three weeks later he was back in my chair and I totally forgot about him saying he was going to buy a beard straightener. After his haircut I leaned him back and got to work on his beard. As I’m trimming and getting things back into place I say offhand “Hey man, your beard looks pretty good today. You been using the hairdryer at home?” to which he replied “No. I told you I was going to buy one of those beard straightening combs.”

I honestly couldn’t believe it. This man has a beard that would make lumberjacks drool. His beard is so thick it sticks out everywhere and under his jaw are a couple of cowlicks that make the whole thing swoop in different directions. It normally takes me a good bit of effort to get everything trimmed and laying flat, but this time all I had to do was trim a few stragglers and reshape the perimeter – it was crazy!

I admitted defeat and told him I was wrong about these beard straightening irons. He laughed it off, and said next time he came in he would bring me one. True to his word, his next appointment he had one for me and it’s been at my station ever since! I can’t speak for the other brands that are out there, but the Arkam Premium Beard Straightening Comb is the truth!
