At UFC 249 Justin Gaethje spent 5 rounds using Justin Ferguson’s face as target practice en route to becoming the interim lightweight champion. A match between Gaethje and Nermagomedov looms large to decide the real champ.
From the very first round, Gaethje was dominant. His left hook put in serious work, and his leg strikes chopped up Ferguson from the get-go. Even Gaethje’s jabs were crisp and ferocious. Aside from a late 2nd round uppercut from Ferguson that rocked Gaethje, this looked more like a sparring match than a proper title fight.
To be fair, Ferguson spent most of his training camp preparing for Nermagomedov (who pulled out of the fight amid pandemic concerns) and he never really looked like he was as prepared for the fight as he should have been. It’s also possible that his 12 fight win streak gave him false confidence and he didn’t take Gaethje as seriously as he should of. One thing is for damn sure though, Tony Ferguson has a chin made of granite. He took shot after shot after shot and didn’t go down – he may be a cyborg.
Finally, in the fifth round with time expiring, Gathje landed yet another crushing blow to what vaguely resembled Fergon’s face. This time Justin stumbled, shook his head a couple of times like he was trying to clear out the cobwebs – and promptly ate another shot in his mush. That was all ref Herb Dean needed to see and he stepped in to end the fight.

Ferguson was admitted to a medical facility after the fight, which is always scary, but this was a great performance from Gaethje and I can’t wait to see his showdown with Nermagomedov. Personally, I’ll be rooting for Gaethje – I can’t stand Nermagomedov and I hope he too, ends up looking like a meatball.
